INFO & QUOTATIONS
PLEXIGLAS IS THE TRADE NAME OF PMMA (POLIMETILMETACRILATO)

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA abbreviated form) is a plastic material formed by methyl methacrylate polymers.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), is also known as acrylic or acrylic glass as well as by the trade names PlexiglasAcryliteLucite, and Perspex among several others (Trespex, Vitroflex, Acrivill, Perclax, Limacryl, Crylux, Oroglas, Setacryl, Altuglas).

DATA:

IUPAC Name (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry): Poly (methyl-2-methylpropenoate)
Molecular Formula: (C5O2H8) n, monomer

ACRYLIC GLASS IS MORE SAFE THAN GLASS

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA, plexiglas, acrylic glass) has the property to be unbreakable depending on its “compound”. For these features it is used in the production of safety carters / protections, vacuum lids for packing machines, safety glasses, furnishing and architectural items.

DATA:

Methacrylate (PMMA, Acrylic Glass) has a breaking point above glass = it is more safe than glass.

Methacrylate is softer and more easily to scratch than glass. Any scratches on cast plates can be easily removed with specific polish (the same used for wood product).

ACRYLIC GLASS IS MORE TRANSPARENT THAN GLASS

Although not many people know it, polymethylmethacrylate PMMA or acrylic glass is more transparent than glass, to the point that it has optical characteristics similar to the fiber in terms of transparency quality and light conduction.

DATA:

Methacrylate (PMMA, pacrylic glass, Perspex) is more transparent than glass in visible light, about 0.93 versus 0.8-0.9 glass.
Unlike glass, there are some formulations that do not stop ultraviolet light (plexiglas GUV-T).
Is transparent to infrared light up to 2800 nm, while the light of wavelengths is substantially blocked.
Specific PMMA formulations, instead, has been studied in order to make acrylic glass block visible light and allow the infrared light to pass through a given frequency range (use: remote control outputs and heat source detectors).

ACRYLIC GLASS IN NOT PLASTIC

Although Acrylic Glass is a plastic material, this should not be deceived, there is plastic and plastic, as there is metal and metal: gold and iron are two metals ….. but there is a lot of difference!

DATA:

  • Gold is not iron – though both are metals
  • Acrylic (plexiglas) is not plastic – although both are plastic materials
ALCOHOL HURTS ... ALSO TO PMMA (ACRYLIC GLASS)!

Acrylic Glass (PMMA, Plexiglas, Luxcite) is a plastic material that needs to be treated with great care and needs some precautions to keep its beauty and gloss in the way unchanged.

HOW TO CLEAN ACRYLIC GLASS:

Use products with NO alcohol, ammonia or similar (aggressive) substances. Once processed, methacrylate (PMMA, plexiglass) is under shock and contact with any of these substances can cause very small cracks inside the material that over time can extend ruining the entire surface.

To clean methacrylate, use a very soft cloth and only for the cleaning of this material. On the surface of the cloth there must be no shavings of other materials, particles, traces of glue or anything else that could scratch the material.

ACRYLIC GLASS CAN BE LIGHTED UP!

FIRM produces flat and thermoformed edge lit acrylic sheet (curved or transformed into three-dimensional shapes such as cone or semisphere trunks).

Acrylic sheet are laser engraved with Backlight Unit Technology.

Backlight Unit Technology: Laser engraving technology based on an algorithm that, depending on the shape and size of edge lit acrylic panels to be made, optimizes the engraving to ensure perfect luminous uniformity.

Led perimeter light also provides significant energy savings.

SOME OF THE PROJECTS REALIZED:

ACRYLIC GLASS DID NOT TURN YELLOW

To make it clear on the subject, there are plastics that turn yellow in a gradual manner over time, but the “aging” of the material (and hence its turning yellow and light transmissibility) depends first of all on the plastic material discussed , then depends on the climatic zones where it is used (it is easier to turn yellow in hot and humid climatic zones).

Acrylic glass (PMMA) is guaranteed by many companies for about 30 years. Companies guarantee the non-yellowing and maximum luminous transmission for solid, hollow, wavy, block, tubes and bars, in transparent non-colored versions.

There are also UV-protected acrylics (UV protection) on one or both sides. These plates then give the plate an ad-hoc protection against yellowing.
